Että se olisi niin helppoa vain nauraa avioeroille! Eräässä huvittavassa, muttei niin hauskassa kohtalossa, eroa tekevät parit usein päätyvät elämään yhdessä lapsensa vuoksi, mutta samalla ovat avioeron liekin kourissa. Carolyn Haxin kolumnissa tarkastellaan erityisesti pariskuntaa, joka elää kuin perheenyhdistäl­lä kuitenkin tyhjällä sovituksella – kun toinen osapuoli pyörittelee kulissien takana uusia ihmissuhteita. Meidän onkin aika miettiä, mitä voimme tehdä: voimme nauraa tilanteille tai toimia yhdessä koko ihmiskunnan hyväksi.

Ja mitä tapahtuu, kun hyvin tarkoitettu apu muuttuu omaksi hyödyksi? Miss Mannersin kirjoituksessa käsitellään yksinkertaista ja mahtavaa toimintaa: alkeiskitit köyhille. Kaunis ajatus, mutta kuten olemme oppineet, tiedä onko avustus aina avuksi – häilyvää on monessa kohtaa. Eikä se varmasti ole ihmisten tyhjyyttä, vaan kenties kyvyttömyyttä vastaanottaa apua? Siinä oletamme, että lahjoitukset vain auttavat, mutta mitä sitten, kun lahjoituskuorma päätyy vain pieniä lahjoituksenvastaanottajia riivaavalle?

Kun asioista tulee monimutkaisempia, meillä on aina mahdollisuus keskustella, pohtia valintoja ja nähdä tarina eri näkökulmista, olipa kyseessä eronneet parit, ystävien outoudet tai hädänalaiset.
