Georgia - Georgia Tech - Gudauri - hiilimonoksidi - intialaiset kansalaiset - ruokajako12 henkeä kuoli Georgiaan, mutta miten se liittyy lentopallon ja ruokajakelun tulevaisuuteen?
Viime viikolla oli surullista uutisoida, että kaksitoista henkilöä on löydetty kuolleena Gudaurin hiihtokeskuksessa Georgiassa. Kuolinsyynä epäillään olleen hiilimonoksidimyrkytys, ja uhrien joukossa oli 11 intialaista kansalaista sekä yksi georgialainen. Tragedia tapahtui ravintolan yläkerroksessa, jossa monilla ulkomaisilla vierailijoilla oli tapana yöpyä. Kulunut kausi on ollut täynnä korkeita lämpötiloja ja odottamatonta säätä, jolloin hiihtokeskuksessa käyminen on ollut erityisen vetovoimaista. Tämä on muistutus siitä, kuinka tärkeää on huolehtia turvallisuudesta myös lomamatkoilla.
Vaikka tämä tapaus oli järkyttävä, Georgian mediassa on uutisoitu myös positiivisista asioista. Georgialaiset opiskelijat, erityisesti Georgia Techin yliopistosta, ovat keksineet innovatiivisia tapoja auttaa paikallista hyväntekeväisyysjärjestöä ruoanjakelussa. Tämän kaltainen yhteisön tuki ei ainoastaan edesauta paikallisia vaan myös luo tiedostavuutta ja ymmärrystä vaikeista asioista, kuten ruokaturvasta. Opiskelijat ovat aina tunnettuja luovista ratkaisuistaan ja kyllähän he ovat myös aktiivisia varsinaisessa yhteisötoiminnassa.
Myös Georgian urheilutilanteet ovat erikoisessa keskiössä, sillä Georgia Techin naisten koripallojoukkue on saanut huomiota viime aikojen voitoistaan. He nousivat AAC:n joukkueeksi viikon aikana, voittaen 82-76 North Carolinaa vastaan. Samaan aikaan Urheilu- ja Nuorisoministeriö on lanseerannut uusia ohjelmia tytöille, joiden kautta he voivat aloittaa tai kehittää lippufutiksen pelaamista kouluissa eri puolilla osavaltiota. Tämä on loistava mahdollisuus nuorille naisille osallistua urheiluharrastuksiin ja kehittää itseään.
Vaikka huoli turvallisuudesta jää vaivaamaan monia, on hyvä muistaa, että jokaisessa tragediassa on myös mahdollisuuksia kasvaa ja oppia. Georgian hiihtokeskuksessa tapahtunut onnettomuus tuo esiin sen, kuinka tärkeää on olla varovainen ja tiedostava. Muista siis nauttia talviretkistä, mutta älä unohda tarkistaa turvallisuusasiat ennen laskettelua tai hiihtoa. Tasa-arvon ja yhteisöllisyyden edistäminen urheilussa on myös hieno keino kääntää ajatuksia kohti tulevaisuutta ja löytää valoa pimeydestä.
