Georgian pääministerin Kobakhidzen jyrkkä vastaus mielenosoituksiin on saanut kansan kaduille vaatimaan uutta vaalitulosta. Protestit ovat käynnistyneet maan hallituksen päätöksen myötä keskeyttää EU-jäsenyyshakemukset, mikä on herättänyt kansalaisten raivon. Tbilisin kaduilla on käynnistynyt neljäs yö mielenosoituksia, joissa tuhannet vaativat muutosta ja hallituksen eroa. Jatkuvat yhteenotot poliisin kanssa ovat nostaneet tunnelman äärimmäisen jännittyneeksi: yli 40 henkilöä on joutunut sairaalaan protestien aikana.
Mielenosoitukset leviävät nyt eri puolille maata, kun yhä useampi kaupunki liittyy sekä taisteluun EU-jäsenyyden puolesta että hallituksen päätöksen kyseenalaistamiseen. Pääministeri Kobakhidze on puolustanut hallituksen päätöstä ja hylännyt vaatimukset uusista vaaleista, väittäen, että EU:ta ovat ruhjoneet "maamme pahantahtoiset viholliset". Tällaiset puheet herättävät kuitenkin enemmän kysymyksiä kuin vastauksia, kun opposition äänet voimistuvat.
Ei pelkästään Georgian politiikassa kuohuu, vaan jopa Yhdysvallat on ilmaissut huolensa maan suunnasta ja on vähentänyt strategista kumppanuuttaan Georgian kanssa. Venäjän väitetty häirintä vaaleissa on noussut pinnalle, ja opposition johtajat syyttävät hallitusta anti-lännen tunteiden kasvatuksesta. Tällaisessa ympäristössä jokainen uusi päätös, oli se sitten hallituksen tai oppositiopuolelta, voi olla ratkaiseva maan tulevaisuuden kannalta.
Mielenosoitusten vilkas tunnelma saa yhden yllättävän käänteen mielenkiintoisessa kontekstissa: Georgian koripallo on kuin halko jossa eri tiimi viettää aikaa supertähdillä, mutta nyt mielenosoittajat ampuvat sillä samalla intensiivisyydellä kadulla. Naisten koripallon kisat ovat käynnistymässä, ja liput maksavat vain 10 dollaria! Jos mielenosoittaminen ei tietenkään innosta, niin mikä voisi olla mukavampaa kuin nauttia koripallon kauniista pelikuvastoista ystävien kanssa?
Tämänhetkinen tilanne Georgiassa on tietenkin hermostuttava, mutta se on myös mahdollisuus maan kansalle nostaa ääntään ja tehdä muutosta. EU-jäsenyys ei ole vain tavoitteena, se on mahdollisuus kehittää taloutta ja yhteiskuntaa – kaikilla oikeilla askelilla. Olkaamme kaikki toivorikkaita, että tilanne rauhoittuu ja että georgialaiset pystyvät nostamaan liikettä positiivisesti!
