Buffalo Sabres ja New Jersey Devils kohtasivat Prahassa Oktober 5, 2024, Suomen aikaa hieman epätavalliseen aikaan – pelissä avattiin NHL:n 2024-2025 kausi. O2 Arenalla pelattu ottelu olikin täynnä jännitystä, kun New Jersey Devils oli päättänyt tehdä Praagista oman jääkiekko-paratiisinsa. Vaikka Sabres saikin maalitilanteet avattua, he pettivät monesti ykkösmaalivahtinsa Leviin tukeutumisessa. Nämä joukkueet tuohtuvat toisiaan pelissä kuin elokuvan päähenkilöit, eikä tilanne ollut lainkaan rauhallinen.

Pelissä seurasimme erityisesti Paul Cotterin otteita, joka loisti devilsien paidassa. Cotter teki kaksi maalia ja johdatti Devilsit voittoon. Sabresin puolelta huomiota herätti myös nuori lupaus Tage Thompson, joka iski ainokaisen maalin joukkueelleen. Jääkiekkovisaajat muistanevat Thompsonin kyvyt, mutta tänään Buffalo Sabresin hyökkäys oli kovin aneeminen, sillä maalipaikkoja oli heikosti ja laukauksia vain 18.

Devilsin hyökkäys oli kuin hyvin voideltu kone, joka ampui kiekkoja maalia kohti 37 kertaa. Devilsin puolustus hoiti hommansa erinomaisesti ja se sai Sabresin roikkumaan harmaissa suonissaan koko ottelun ajan. Tämä peli oli enemmän kuin vain kolme pistettä; se oli opetus Buffalo Sabresille, että NHL:ssä jokainen ottelu vaatii täyden keskittymisen ja kunnollista yhteistyötä.

NHL Global Seriesiin osallistuminen on aina iso tilanne, ja se tuo mukanaan lisäjännitettä. Prahan hartain fanikulttuuri lisäsi eloa ottelun ympärille. Mielenkiintoista on, että NHL on alkanut yhä enemmän suuntautua Eurooppaan vuoden 2022 jälkeen, ja tämän päivän ottelu oli yksi niiden suuri urheilushow, mikä voidaan sanoa madonna-henkiseksi tilaisuudeksi!
