Revontulet, tuo pohjoisen taivaan ihme, tarjoavat jälleen kerran unohtumatonta nähtävää Yhdysvaltojen pohjoisimmille osavaltioille. Mukaan joukkoon liittyvät myös Perseidit, vuoden odotetuin meteorisateen huippu, joka tuo mukanaan vilauksen taivaallisista tähdistä. Kun astronomiset olosuhteet ovat suotuisat, yöllinen taivas täyttyy värikkäistä valojuovista ja tähtisateista, mikä on taatusti unelmien täyttymys kaikille tähtiä ja luontoa rakastaville.

Viime viikonloppuna Yhdysvaltain koillisnurkassa nautittiin todella näyttävästä esityksestä, kun revontulet loistivat erityisesti New Yorkin, Michiganin ja Wisconsinin taivaalla. Moni taivaanvaeltaja huomasi, että vaikka tähtisateet vetivätkin heitä puoleensa, revontulet tekivät illasta vielä erityisemmän. Kuvia jakaneet ihmiset, jotka seurasivat tätä luonnon ihmettä, ovat olleet innoissaan ja kehuneet kokemustaan vertaamalla sitä toisinaan aikaisempiin yötaivaan esityksiin.

Revontulien ennusteet ovat näyttäytyneet yhä houkuttelevina ja monet tähtiharrastajat ovat tunteneet kutkutusta, kun mahdollisuus nähdä niitä uudelleen lumosi heitä. Astronomit varoittavat, että geomagneettiset myrskyt voivat nostaa revontulet näkyvyyteen jopa alueilla, joilla niitä ei yleensä nähdä. On ihmeellistä, miten kaukana avaruudessa tapahtuvat ilmiöt voivat vaikuttaa meille täällä maapallolla.

Maailmanlaajuisesti revontulet johtuvat auringon aktiivisuudesta, ja ne ovat syytä ihastella. Tiesitkö, että revontulet syntyvät, kun aurinkotuulen hiukkaset törmäävät maapallon ilmakehään?
