Roberta Metsola, maltalainen Euroopan kansanpuolueen (EPP) poliitikko, on valittu uudelleen Euroopan parlamentin presidentiksi. Hän otti ensimmäisen kautensa vastaan tammikuussa 2022, ja nyt hän jatkaa tehtävässä vielä 2,5 vuotta kerättyään historiallisen suuren äänimäärän.

Tiistaina järjestetyssä äänestyksessä 45-vuotias kristillisdemokraatti Malta-saarelta sai 562 ääntä puolesta uusista 623 annetusta äänestyksestä. Tämä oli korkein äänimäärä, mitä Euroopan parlamentin presidentti on koskaan saanut.

“Vahva parlamentti vahvassa Euroopassa” - Euroopan parlamentin presidentti Roberta Metsola korosti puheessaan vakaumustaan politiikasta, joka edistää Euroopan yhtenäisyyttä.

Roberta Metsola voitti kilpailijansa espanjalaisen MEP Irene Monteron (Vasemmisto), joka sai 61 ääntä. Äänestyksen jälkeen Metsola painotti “vahvan Euroopan parlamentin” merkitystä.
