Venäjän presidentti Vladimir Putin varoitti länttä keskiviikkona, että Venäjä on teknisesti valmis ydinsotaan ja että jos Yhdysvallat lähettää joukkoja Ukrainaan, seurauksena voi olla katastrofi. Putin antoi laajan haastattelun Venäjän RIA-uutistoimistolle ja Rossiya-1-valtiolliselle televisiolle, vain muutama päivä ennen maaliskuun 15.-17. päivän vaaleja.
